City of Birmingham Development Squad

The role of the City of Birmingham Development Squad is to ensure all the young swimmers with big potential that are invited into the squad get the perfect grounding to set them up for a successful career in competitive swimming. Swimmers will be aged 9-12yrs on the squad, a crucial time in all swimmers' development when essential skills are learned that will stay with them throughout their swimming careers and determine whether they are able to reach their maximum potential or not.

The squad trains on a Wednesday evening, Friday evening, Saturday morning and Sunday morning at Newtown Leisure Centre and has access to 4 two hour pool sessions as well as 4 half hour sessions dedicated to introducing young swimmers to landwork. The Sunday session is reserved only for those swimmers aged 11 or 12 during that calendar year. This is a session that we tailor to the specific needs of the older members of the squad. The swimmers aged 9 or 10 during the calendar year complete the 3 sessions on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

The squad is led by Chris Littler whose patience and persistence ensure that all swimmers who are part of the squad quickly develop their basic swimming skills and techniques.

Swimmers who train with the Development Squad will represent City of Birmingham at selected Open Meets as well as Regional and National competitions. They will retain duel registration with their 'Home' club and represent them at County Championships and League Galas. Most swimmers on the squad will also be required to complete 1 or 2 sessions a week with their home club in addition to the 3 or 4 with City of Birmingham.

Places on the squad are run on a trial basis. Any swimmer aged 9-12yrs is welcome to trial for the squad. If you are interested in being part of the squad please contact Carl Grosvenor at carl.grosvenor@birmingham.gov.uk or on 07919293713.
